Quad ESL-2812
Loudspeakers
Relative price
well above typical
Among the 26 loudspeakerss in the catalogue, this one is well above typical.
A band places a component against its peers and carries no price. It is deliberately the only price indicator on this page: a second one, measured against a different set, would narrow the two together far enough to give the figure away.
What it is
Quad ESL family traces to the original ESL-57 (1956), the world's first full-range electrostatic. ESL-2812 is the smaller of the two current production models (4 panels: 2 mid-treble + 2 bass). 2024 "X" variant brings refined power supply, panel construction, and grille cloth (Paul McConville leadership). Quad's slogan: "The Closest Approach to the Original Sound."
Voicing — extraordinary midrange transparency and unmatched coherence; an electrostatic dipole has no enclosure colouration but loses bass authority below 50 Hz and demands precise listening-position geometry. Voicing camp: balanced/reference (extreme), with the unique "panel" character of dipole electrostatics (lateral imaging is a strength; bass slam is not).
PASSIVE design — internal step-up transformer and EHT bias supply, but driven by external power amplifier. Voltage-sensitive: reviewer consensus is that valve amps with high impedance multipliers (Quad II Forty, Quad II Eighty, conrad-johnson) flatter the load curve; high-feedback solid-state can sound thin.
CAVITY FIT: 690 W × 1050 H × 380 D — exceeds every cavity constraint. Open-dipole rear radiation requires 1m+ rear-wall clearance for design-intent imaging. Catalogued for §9 reference as part of Britain's most distinguished electrostatic loudspeaker family; NOT cavity-compatible.
