Quad ESL-2912

Loudspeakers

Relative price

well above typical

Among the 26 loudspeakerss in the catalogue, this one is well above typical.

A band places a component against its peers and carries no price. It is deliberately the only price indicator on this page: a second one, measured against a different set, would narrow the two together far enough to give the figure away.

What it is

Flagship Quad ESL — 6 panels (vs ESL-2812's 4) for greater bass extension (32 Hz vs 35 Hz), higher max SPL, and improved dynamic capability. Stereophile review (Lipnick): "the ESL-2912 represents the pinnacle of Quad's achievements." 2024 ESL-2912X variant introduced refined panel construction and increased permitted peak input voltage.

Voicing — same ESL family signature as 2812 (extraordinary midrange transparency; coherent point-source imaging via concentric-ring electrode delay) but with greater dynamic headroom and lower bass extension. Reviewer consensus: distinctive and instantly identifiable as an electrostatic; lateral imaging exceptional, bass authority below 35 Hz still limited compared to dynamic floorstanders. Voicing camp: balanced/reference (extreme), with characteristic dipole panel signature.

PASSIVE design — driven by external power amplifier through internal EHT bias supply and audio-frequency step-up transformer. Best paired with valve amps that flatter the variable impedance load (Quad II Forty, Quad II Eighty natural choices); some solid-state designs (particularly those with high feedback and limited current) sound thin or congested into the ESL load.
