What it is
NEW ENTRY (2026-05-12) per currency audit. Audio Note (UK) Level 3 preamp; in production since 1996, "topology backbone" of the AN preamp range (M3 → M5 → M6 → M8 are the M-family; M9 / M10 sit above as Level 5/6 references). Peter Qvortrup (AN UK Director): "The M3 went into production in 1995 and has sold very well since then... it forms the topology backbone of our pre-amplifier range." Hand-built Hove, East Sussex.
NAME VARIANT CORRECTION: The Tier 1 audit recommendation cited "M3 Phono Silver" or "M3 Phono Silver Signature" — neither variant is published by Audio Note UK. The "Silver" / "Silver Signature" suffixes apply to SET amplifiers (Conqueror, Quest, Conquest, Paladin) and the Meishu integrated, NOT to the M-preamp series. The Audio Note level system upgrades M-series via NUMBER (M3 → M5 → M6 → M8 with silver wiring at higher levels), not Silver suffix. This entry covers the verified base M3 Phono. Audit lesson #14d reinforced.
CIRCUIT TOPOLOGY: Level 3 preamp — Pure Class A + Zero Negative Feedback + Single-Ended + Valve Rectification + Materials/component quality. Line stage: 1× ECC82 + 1× 5687WB anode-follower with output transformer. Phono stage (M3 Phono variant): 3× GE 5670 double triodes with passive CR RIAA equalisation. PSU: "Mini-Galahad" — 6X5 valve rectifier + ECL82 regulator + 5651WA voltage stabilizer. M3 RIAA configuration uses 10-11 valves total.
Recognition: Resistor Mag review (2023): "a unique and elusive musicality that is tough to describe... had gravitas, delicacy, and musical momentum... an end-of-the-line valve preamplifier". Tracking Angle review by Dave McNair. TNT-Audio review (Geoff Husband 2003 — historic context). Jeff's Place 2024 walkthrough against M6 RIAA: M3 is one tier below M6 (M3 = copper-wired, M6 = silver-wired with tantalum resistors). Hi-Fi Review HK named M3 "Pre-Amplifier of the Year" consistently from 2001 onward.
Topology for vinyl-only chain: TT/MM-cart → built-in MM phono → line stage → RCA or XLR output → power amp → speakers. For MC: TT → external Audio Note SUT (AN-S2, AN-S4, etc.) → M3 phono input. The M3 Line variant (no built-in phono) requires an external phono stage upstream — but adding the M3 Phono variant is the more common Audio Note system choice for vinyl-focused buyers.
CRITICAL PARTNER: Audio Note Level 3 reference vinyl system pairs M3 Phono → Conqueror Silver Signature (or higher SET 300B power amp) → AN-J or AN-E high-sensitivity speaker. In cavity-constrained context this last link is broken (no cavity-eligible 93+dB speaker exists). M3 Phono → solid-state power amp + cavity-eligible speaker is an alternative pairing but loses much of the Audio Note voicing intent.
