EAR Yoshino 868L (Line)

Preamplifier

Relative price

typical

Among the 29 preamplifiers in the catalogue, this one is typical.

A band places a component against its peers and carries no price. It is deliberately the only price indicator on this page: a second one, measured against a different set, would narrow the two together far enough to give the figure away.

What it is

Hi-Fi World 5/5 review (Noel Keywood, March 2009): "great preamp package... lively sense of clarity and the usual extra sense of spaciousness... super fast and vividly clean sounding valve preamplifier."

Fully balanced transformer-coupled architecture: 1× XLR pair + 5× RCA inputs; 2× XLR pair + 2× RCA outputs simultaneously available. Output transformer enables low-Z drive of long cables and any power amp.

Compatibility: ideal pairing with EAR 509 monos, 890 stereo, 534A — or EAR Yoshino integrated bypass. XLR balanced output also drives Sugden MPA-4, Naim NAP 350, Cyrus Mono X, Bryston, etc. Cross-brand partnerships well-documented (forum threads pair 868PL with Naim 552 replacements and ARC).

Competition record

Assessed against 7 rivals across the sixty systems: it takes the slot in none of its 43 head-to-heads.
