Musical Fidelity M8x Vinyl

Phono stage

Relative price

above typical

Among the 44 phono stages in the catalogue, this one is above typical.

A band places a component against its peers and carries no price. It is deliberately the only price indicator on this page: a second one, measured against a different set, would narrow the two together far enough to give the figure away.

What it is

CIRCUIT TOPOLOGY: Fully balanced dual-mono — each channel has separate + and - amplifier paths from input to output, doubling the discrete component count vs M6x Vinyl. No integrated circuits in the signal path; 3-stage Class A gain throughout. Discrete input power filtering + DC blocking circuit. Encapsulated toroidal transformer. Two symmetrical low-noise power supplies (one per channel).

I/O EXCEPTIONAL: 2× XLR balanced inputs + 2× RCA unbalanced inputs (4 total), each individually configurable AND settings retained when switching between inputs. Multi-turntable capable. BOTH XLR balanced AND RCA unbalanced outputs with their own discrete drivers — can be used simultaneously. This makes the M8x Vinyl an exceptional choice for the M:F (fully-balanced) mandate or any system using XLR separates.

EQ FLEXIBILITY: standard RIAA + DECCA FFRR (1950s Decca pressings) + COLUMBIA curves. Most modern phono stages are RIAA-only; the M8x is one of very few current products supporting vintage equalisation curves (Hi-Fi News review notes this as a distinguishing feature for collectors of 50s/60s vinyl).

KNOWN QUIRK (documented in AVForums + Hi-Fi News reviews): the cartridge load adjustment is "either/or" — MM mode allows capacitance adjustment but impedance fixed at 47kΩ; MC mode allows impedance adjustment but capacitance fixed at 400pF. Some users find this restrictive (Cyrus 40 PPA allows both adjustments in both modes). For the vast majority of cartridges this is not a practical limit, but specialised tuning is restricted.

PHILOSOPHY POSITIONING: Reference primary (measurement-driven engineering, dual-mono Class A, very low THD, very low noise, multiple EQ curves), with Characterful secondary (the dual-mono fully-balanced topology produces an audible "weight" and richness that Hi-Fi News and AVForums reviewers characterise as engaging and "alive"). Suits high-mass cavity speakers (Harbeth P3ESR, Spendor Classic 4/5) particularly well per multiple reviews.

CAVITY: full-width 483mm chassis — does NOT fit the 550W×324H×275/305D cavity envelope in the "speakers and monoblocks only" sense, but phono stages sit in the unconstrained source cabinet so this is NOT a placement constraint. Heavy (10.6kg) — needs solid shelf.

Who it comes up against

Naim NVC TT MM/MC

16 lost · Anchored, Artisan, BBC Sound, Cavity-Native, Characterful, Intimate, PRaT, Reference, Romantic, Twin Arms

Against the Twin Arms brief, the Naim NVC TT MM/MC keeps the slot decisively.

On its own merits the Musical Fidelity M8x Vinyl is the stronger phono stage — but it loses here on fit: the way it sits with the rest of this system under the Twin Arms weighting.
