Rega Mercury

Preamplifier

Relative price

above typical

Among the 29 preamplifiers in the catalogue, this one is above typical.

A band places a component against its peers and carries no price. It is deliberately the only price indicator on this page: a second one, measured against a different set, would narrow the two together far enough to give the figure away.

What it is

Rega flagship preamp launched November 2025; designed and hand-built Southend, UK. Most electronically complex Rega product ever made. Circuit lineage traces back to Rega Elicit (~1990).

Built-in DAC (twin Wolfson WM8742 chips, derived from Saturn Mk3 / Isis CD player) — to PCM 192/24, DSD64. Discrete headphone amp. Full-colour IPS display.

I/O: 4 RCA + 1 XLR inputs; 1 RCA + 1 XLR outputs. CRITICAL: Rega specifically recommends RCA-RCA connection — the core circuit is single-ended. XLR is provided for connectivity but adds noise vs RCA.

Competition record

Assessed against 7 rivals across the sixty systems: it takes the slot in none of its 36 head-to-heads.

The dimension the engine names as the weakest link, counted across every head-to-head it lost.
