Sugden Sapphire DAP-800

Preamplifier

Relative price

typical

Among the 29 preamplifiers in the catalogue, this one is typical.

A band places a component against its peers and carries no price. It is deliberately the only price indicator on this page: a second one, measured against a different set, would narrow the two together far enough to give the figure away.

What it is

Hi-Fi+ review (Sept 2024, Alan Sircom): "the most satisfying and musical pre and power combination available from Sugden... a two year period of developing unique circuit designs."

VCV CIRCUIT: Sugden's "Voltage-Current-Voltage" Class A folded-cascode topology — high-Z input → current gain stage (no attenuation) → folded cascode → Class A output. Wide bandwidth, low capacitive connectivity, tonal balance preserved across output level.

KEY DIFFERENCE FROM LA-4: Sapphire adds onboard 24/96 non-oversampling DAC (irrelevant to vinyl audit but useful for owners with mixed sources); fully-isolated PSUs for analogue + digital domains; lower output impedance for better long-cable + power-amp matching.

Native pairing: Sugden Sapphire FBA-800 power amp (Floating Bridge Class A 40W/8Ω) — designed-pair architectural advantage. Cross-brand: any high-sensitivity power amp with RCA or XLR input.

Note: NOT a Masterclass series successor — runs in parallel. LA-4 remains in production for buyers preferring older-school analogue-only minimalism. DAP-800 is for buyers wanting flagship Sugden VCV with modern dual-domain construction.

Competition record

Assessed against 8 rivals across the sixty systems: it takes the slot in none of its 45 head-to-heads.
